ULock Program

Body

What is the ULock Program, and how does it help prevent bicycle theft?

The ULock Program at Loyola University Chicago is designed to reduce bicycle thefts on and around campus by offering affordable Kryptonite Evolution Series4 bike locks to current students, faculty, and staff. Bicycle theft is one of the most common crimes on college campuses, often due to improper securing or use of easily defeated chain or cable locks. When used correctly, a U-lock provides a more effective deterrent against theft.

Who is eligible for the ULock Program?

The program is open to any current Loyola University Chicago student, faculty, or staff member who is registered at least part-time for the Fall or Spring semester. Participants must register their bicycles with both Loyola University Chicago and the Chicago Police Department to be eligible.

What steps do you need to follow to participate in the ULock Program?

To participate in the program, follow these steps:

  1. Fill out the registration form available online.
  2. Pay $30 (students) or $40 (faculty/staff) via cash, check, or money order made out to Loyola University Chicago.
  3. Print a copy of the registration confirmation and bring it, along with your payment, Loyola ID, and your bicycle, to one of the following locations:
    • Lake Shore Campus: Campus Safety Office, 6427 N Sheridan Road, available 24/7.
    • Water Tower Campus: Baumhart Hall, 26 E Pearson, 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

What important information should you know about using the ULock Program?

  • A lock is only effective when used properly. Review the literature provided with the lock or use the City of Chicago’s guide on securing your bicycle for best practices.
  • Loyola University Chicago is not liable for theft or damage after purchasing a lock through the program.
  • Kryptonite provides a warranty and anti-theft protection with the lock. Participants are responsible for mailing the required documents to register the lock, as no online option is available.
  • Only one lock is allowed per student, faculty, or staff member.
  • The program operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and registering your bicycle does not guarantee a lock.
  • If you have previously registered your bicycle with Loyola Campus Safety, you must re-register to participate in the ULock Program.
