Respondus Browser install steps for Apple MacBook loaner laptops

Body

These are instructions serve as resource in the event students are having issues installing or launching the Respondus Lockdown browser on an Apple/Mac loaner laptop. These instructions are not applicable or necessary for Lenovo/PC laptops from the Equipment Loan Program.

While the login username stickered on DMS loaner laptops do have administrator rights, we have noted an occasional situation with the Mac Apple laptops when attempting to permit the installation of the Respondus Lockdown browser. You would need to run a Terminal command to disable the ARD Agent in order to permit and use the application for the login session.
  1. The Terminal can be opened by by navigating to Finder > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
  2. Type following string into the Terminal (all one line):
sudo /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/Resources/kickstart -deactivate -configure -access -off

  1. Then Press Enter.
  2. You will be prompted to enter a password. Enter the same password used to sign into the Macbook (if logged in from off-campus, use the password stickered on the inside of the laptop). Note that nothing will show on screen as you type.
  3. Press the Enter key when you are done typing your password and the command will run.
The ARD Agent should now be disabled allowing the Respondus Lockdown Browser to start successfully.

Please note that all loaner laptops are configured like computer lab workstations - any saved documents, configurations, or applications will be removed and erased upon reboot. If a reboot occurs, these steps would need to be repeated. This security configuration is a policy set forth by the University Information Security Office for data security-academic integrity requirements.
