Respondus Lockdown Browser

Overview

Respondus LockDown Browser is a specialized web browser designed to maintain the integrity of online assessments by restricting students' ability to access other software, websites, and functions on their computers during an exam. Integrated with Loyola University Chicago’s Sakai Tests & Quizzes tool, LockDown Browser provides a secure test environment suited to both face-to-face and remote assessment needs. This tool is commonly used for high-stakes testing in a controlled environment, and students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with it through practice exams provided by faculty.

Key Features

  • Secure Testing Environment: Locks access to other applications, websites, and functionalities on students’ computers, ensuring focus remains solely on the exam window.
  • Integration with Sakai: Seamlessly connects with Sakai’s Tests & Quizzes tool, making it easy for faculty to administer secure, online assessments.
  • Proctoring Support: When used in proctored settings, LockDown Browser assists proctors by enforcing strict access controls, reducing opportunities for academic dishonesty.
  • Respondus Monitor Compatibility: For exams that require video monitoring, Respondus Monitor adds another layer of security, using students' web cams to verify their identity and actions during tests. Respondus Monitor is currently used for Loyola’s Math Placement Assessment (MPA). Loyola does not have a license for general Respondus Monitor use outside of the MPA.
  • Practice Test Option: Faculty can provide practice exams, allowing students to install and test the LockDown Browser functionality before high-stakes assessments.

Benefits

  • Supports Academic Integrity: Limits student access to external resources and ensures they focus on their assessment, helping to maintain fairness and integrity during high-stakes exams.
  • Reduces Test Anxiety: Students can use practice tests to become comfortable with LockDown Browser, ensuring they know what to expect and reducing potential technical issues on exam day.
  • Flexible Usage: LockDown Browser can be used for both in-person proctored exams and remote asynchronous assessments, offering versatile options for instructors.
  • Enhanced Monitoring Capabilities: When paired with Respondus Monitor, faculty have access to video recordings of student exam sessions, providing a further layer of accountability for remote assessments. Respondus Monitor is currently used for Loyola’s Math Placement Assessment (MPA). Loyola does not have a license for general Respondus Monitor use outside of the MPA.
  • Seamless LMS Integration: LockDown Browser is integrated with the Sakai Tests & Quizzes tool, allowing faculty and students easy access to secure exams directly from the learning management system.
