Licensing and Access To Microsoft 365

How Do Non-Affiliated Persons (NAP) Access Microsoft 365?

  1. Office Online Access:
By default, Non-Affiliated Persons (NAP) accounts only have access to Microsoft Office Online, which is the web version of Microsoft 365 applications.

  2. License Restrictions:
Due to Microsoft license restrictions, access to the Microsoft 365 Office applications for the client version is not available for Sponsored Guest (NAP) accounts.
  3. How to Access Office Online:

    1. Visit the Microsoft Office portal: https://portal.office.com.
    2. Log in using your NAP account credentials.
    3. Use the web-based applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint directly through the portal.

How Long Do I Have Access to Microsoft 365?

  • Students: The full Microsoft 365 license expires at graduation. Installed copies of Office will change to "Read Only" when the license expires, meaning files can be opened but not edited. Content stored in OneDrive is also removed, and access to Teams will no longer function.
  • Faculty/Staff: Access to Microsoft 365 is revoked upon termination of employment, including storage and applications. Emeritus faculty retain their access.

What Should I Do If I Encounter Issues on macOS?

When opening a Microsoft program, some macOS users may receive an error message that their subscription has expired or the machine was removed from subscribed systems. This may be caused by a previous license under a different account.

To resolve this issue:

  1. Install and run the Microsoft License Removal Tool.
  2. Follow the instructions from the Microsoft site here: Microsoft License Removal Tool Instructions.
